The long crack is the most common type of windshield crack. Also known as the "edge crack",  the long crack occurs due to manufacturing tension in the windshield around the perimeter - it is legally a defect. When a stone, rock, or pebble strikes the perimeter area of the windshield, (around the two-inch perimeter) it will crack immediately to about 8 to 10 inches long. Many people will have a small stone or rock hit the windshield and it looks insignificant and leave their windshields in this condition. Do not leave a rock chip left unrepaired, it will expand and these cracks are in the middle area of the windshield and do not run to the edge.
